Children's Centre for Civilisation and Creativity, home to a Fidelity planetarium, wins 2012 Museums & Heritage International Excellence Award

UK-based Mallinson Architects & Engineers, the company behind the renovated and expanded Children's Centre for Civilisation and Creativity in Cairo, Egypt, accepted an International Award for Excellence before an audience of museums for heritage professionals at the 2012 Museums & Heritage Awards in London. The ceremony took place on Wednesday, May 16th.

The award was presented in recognition of the thoughtful and ambitious presentation of Egyptian history and its relevance, both past and future, at the museum.

Partnering with Mallinson Architects & Engineers on the project, Global Immersion delivered a custom Fidelity Bright digital planetarium system into a new building last year, which opened to the public in April 2012. At 21-meters in diameter, the installation is the largest planetarium in Egypt.

The prestigious attraction is designed to submerge children in Egypt's cultural, astronomical, scientific and historical ties. Immersive media specialists, NSC Creative, delivered the custom dome show for the project - taking children on an adventure through time to meet their ancestors and the great pioneers of Egypt. The journey begins with the discovery of how ancient Pharaohs used the stars to build tombs and temples, continues through to observe early Arabic astronomers, scientists and rulers, and finally travels to the present day looking down on Earth from the edge of space.

Speaking about the accolade, Michael Mallinson, Project Architect for the Cairo project said, "You cannot imagine what this award means to the people involved. The project has succeeded against so many odds, surviving political change to emerge triumphant."

Martin Howe, CEO at Global Immersion, attended the award ceremony with Mallinson Architects & Engineers and representatives of the Children's Centre for Civilisation and Creativity. He added; "This has been a wonderful venture in a country with outstanding heritage completed during a time of historical change - we are proud to have worked on such an exciting, unusual and award-winning project; especially one so dedicated to enriching the lives of Egypt's next generation."
